15 day Birding in the north of Peru

This 15 Day birding tour in the North of Peru will give you the chance to explore the best birding areas in the North part of Peru where several endemic species are found and it is also the Marvelous Spatuletail home.

Day1: Chiclayo- Bosque Pomac – Olmos

Today we will travel from Chiclayo to Bosque Pomac, at Bosque Puma’s dry forest we will look for: Peruvian Plant Cutter (Phytotoma raimondii), ***Rufous Flycatcher (Myiarchus semirufus), Tumbes Swalow (Tachycineta stolzmanni), Scarlet Backed Woodpecker (Veniliornis callonotus), Necklaced Spinetail (Synallaxis stictothorax), and Cinereous Finch (Piezorina cinerea). after birding Bosque Pomac we will continue to Olmos pass and Quebrada limon in order to see the endemic White winged Guan (Penelope albipennis), Tumbes Tyrant (Tumbezia salvini), Elegant Crescentchest (Melanopareia elegans), Guayaquil woodpecker (Campephilus gayaquilensis), Red masked Parakeet (Psittacara erythrogenys) among other birds; we will spend the night at Olmos in a local Hotel.

Day2: Olmos - Limon de Purcoya – Jaen

This day we will travel to Limon the Purcoya very, the area is a very good site for birding where we can see. ***Piura Chat Tyrant (Ochthoeca piurae), Chapman´s Antshire, Black Cowlet Saltator (Saltator nigriceps), Ecuadorian piculet (Picumnus sclateri), Rufous Necked Foliage gleaner (Syndactyla ruficollis), Henna Hooded Foliage Gleaner (Hylocryptus erythrocephalus), Purcoya Hermit and Bay Crowned Brush Finch (Atlapetes seebohmi). After explore the area we will continue towards Jaen before Jaen we will make a stop in order to find the following species: Little Inca Finch (Incaspiza watkinsi), Marañon Crescent chest (Melanopareia maranonica), Chichipe Spinetail (Synallaxis stictothorax) and Marañon Slaty Antshire.

Day3: Jaen - Pomacochas or Florida.

Today in our way to Pomacochas we will look for the following species: Little Inca Finch (Incaspiza watkinsi), Spotted Rail (Pardirallus maculates), Marañon Spinetail (Synallaxis maranonica), Yellow Tailed Oriole (Icterus mesomelas), Marañon Thrush (Turdus maranonicus), and Buff Bellied Tanager (Thlypopsis inornata), besides the birds mentioned above we can also several species of hummingbirds (Trochilidae), seedeaters. In this day we will have the chance to see the Endemic and very Famous Marvelous Spatuletail; humming like Little Woodstar, purple Collared Woodstar (Myrtis fanny), Purple Throated Sunangel (Heliangelus viola), Andean Emerald (Amazilia franciae) can also be found in the area. We will spend the Night at Puma cochas.

Day4: Pomacochas- Abra Patricia

This day we will look for the very elusive ***Rusty tinged Antpitta (Grallaria przewalskii), as well as for ***Russet mantled Softailm (Thripophaga berlepschi), Blackish Tapaculo (Scytalopus latrans), Red Hooded Tanager (Piranga rubriceps), and White capped Diper (Cinclus leucocephalus). At our Lodge in Abra Patricia we will spend two nights; in the area we will look for the famous long whiskered Owlet.

Day5: Abra Patricia lodge area all day

Along the road on the cloud forest this day we will look for very nice to tanagers (Thraupidae), flycatchers (Tyrannidae), and Endemic Species like: ***Speckle Chested Piculet (Picumnus steindachneri), ***Ocre Fronted Antpitta (Grallaricula ochraceifrons), Bar Winged Wood wren (Henicorhina leucoptera), Royal Sunangel (Heliangelus regalis), cinnamon Breasted tody Tyrant (Hemitriccus cinnamomeipectus), ***Inca Flycatcher (Leptopogon taczanowskii), Vermilion Tanager (Calochaetes coccineus), Ecuadorian Pietail, Andean Cock of the Rock (Rupicola peruvianus), Red Ruffd Fruitcrow (Pyroderus scutatus), White Capped tanager (Sericossypha albocristata), Yellow Scarf Tanager Iridosornis reinhardti, Chestnut Crestescotinga Lulu´s Tody Flycatcher, ***Chestnut Antpitta (Grallaria blakei) and a lot more bird species.

Day6: Abra Patricia – Rioja

In our way to Rioja, we will have the chance to see species like: Golden Collared Honeycreeper (Iridophanes pulcherrimus), Virsicolored Barbet (Eubucco versicolor), Black Bellied Tanager (Ramphocelus melanogaster), Lanceolated Monklet (Micromonacha lanceolata), Masket Trogon (Trogon personatus), Crested Quetzal (Pharomachrus antisianus), Speckle Chested Piculet (Picumnus steindachneri), Blue Browed Tanager (Tangara cyanotis), White Collared Jay (Cyanolyca viridicyanus), Crimson Mantled Woodpecker (Piculus rivolii),White Capped Diper (Cinclus leucocephalus), Point Tailed Palmcreeper (Berlepschia rikeri), Russet Crowned Crake (Anurolimnas viridis), Yellow Tyrannulet (Capsiempis flaveola), Stripe Necked Tody Tyrant (Hemitriccus striaticollis) and Blakish Rail (Pardirallus nigricans). We will spend the night at Rioja in a local Hotel.

Day7: Rioja- Moyobamba

45min. away there is an area where we can find some endemic birds; in the area we can observe birds like: ***Mishana tyrannulet (Zimmerius villarejoi), Red Billed Tyrannulet (Zimmerius cinereicapilla), Buff Throated Tody Tyrant (Hemitriccus rufigularis), TataupaTinamou, Pale Breasted Trush (Turdus leucomelas), Cinereous Breasted Spinetail (Synallaxis hypospodia), Russet crowned Crake (Anurolimnas viridis), Pearly Vented Tody Tyrant (Hemitriccus margaritaceiventer), Firy Capped (Machaeropterus pyrocephalus), Manakin (Pipridae), Little Tinamou (Crypturellus soui), Buckles's Forest Falcon (Micrastur buckleyi), Black Billed Seed Finch (Oryzoborus atrirostris), Blackish Nightjar (Caprimulgus nigrescens), Rufous Nightjar (Antrostomus rufus), Spot Billed Nightjar, Yellow Bellied Elaenia (Elaenia flavogaster), Stripe Manakin (Machaeropterus regulus), Masked Tanager (Tangara nigrocincta), White Plumed Antbird (Pithys albifrons), and other bird species. Later we will return to Moyobamba where we will spend the night.

Day8: Moyobamba – Miskiyaquillo Hostel

Today we will travel to Miskiyaquillo which is found 20 minutes away from our hotel. There in one of the trails we will look for the following species: Firy Throated Fruiteater (Pipreola chlorolepidota), Black and White Tody Tyrant(Poecilotriccus capitalis), White Plumed Antbird (Pithys albifrons), Golden Headed Manakin (Ceratopipra erythrocephala), White vireo (Vireo griseus), and Cerulean Warbler (Setophaga cerulea). In the afternoon we will have the chance to see 18 species of hummingbirds that came to feed on the feeders we have at the lodge, there we will observe species like: Rufouscrested Coquette (Lophornis delattrei), Wirecrested Thorntail (Discosura popelairii), Golden Tailed Sapphire (Chrysuronia oenone), Sapphire Spangled Emerald ( Amazilia lactea), Violetear Brown (Colibri delphinae), Gray Breasted Sabrewing (Campylopterus largipennis), Long Tailed Hermit (Phaethornis superciliosus), Black Throated Hermit (Phaethornis atrimentalis), Bue Tailed Hemerald (Chlorostilbon mellisugus), Fork Tailed Woodnymph Thalurania furcata. There is also a botanical garden of orchids where we can see more than 600 species of orchids. At night after dinner we'll go to look for the owls, the Owl species se can find are: Band Bellied Owl (Pulsatrix melanota), Crested Owl (Lophostrix cristata), Rufous Nightjar (Antrostomus rufus), Blackish Nightjar (Caprimulgus nigrescens), and Spectacled Owl (Pulsatrix perspicillata).

Day9: Miskiyaquillo – Tarapoto

This morning we will maing focus on observing the Humming birds; later we will travel to Tarapoto, along the way we will make a stop in order to find Oilbirs. Juan Guerra is an area that is found after Tarapoto, there we will look for: Northern Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus), Sulphur Bellied Tyrant Manakin (Neopelma sulphureiventer), Rusty Backed Antwren (Formicivora rufa), Coraya Wren (Pheugopedius coraya), Chestnut Capped Puffbird (Bucco macrodactylus), Hoatzin (Ophisthocomus hoazin), Lettered Aracari (Pteroglossus inscriptus), Violaceous Jay (Cyanocorax violaceus), Great Antshrike (Taraba major), and Rusty fronted Tody Flycatcher (Poecilotriccus latirostris). After overnight will return to Tarapoto to spend the night.

Day10: Tarapoto – Abra Patricia

Before travel to Abra Patricia we will observe the following bird species: Dotted Nanager, Plumbeous Euphonia (Euphonia plumbea), Masked Tanager (Tangara nigrocincta), Scaled pigeon (Patagioenas speciosa), Wattled Guan (Aburria aburri), Blue Banded Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus coeruleicinctis), Golden Collared Toucanet (Selenidera reinwardtii), White Throated Toucan (Ramphastos tucanus), Blakish Pewee (Contopus nigrescens), Andean Kock of the Rock (Rupicola peruvianus), Golden Tailed Sapphire (Chrysuronia oenone), Fork Tailed Woodnymph (Thalurania furcata), long Tailed Hermit (Phaethornis superciliosus), Koepcke's Hermit (Phaethornis koepckeae), Striolated Puffbird (Nystalus striolatus), White Throated Woodpecker (Piculus leucolaemus), and Slaty Capped Shrikevireo (Vireolanius leucotis), later we will return to Tarapoto for lunch and then head towards Abra Patricia where we will spend the night.

Day11: Abra Patricia – Leimebamba

In our way to Leimebamba we will look birds like: Buff Breasted Tanager (Dubusia taeniata), ***Black Necked Woodpeker (Colaptes atricollis), Marañon Thrush (Turdus maranonicus), ***Baron's Spinetail (Cranioleuca baroni), Chestnut Crowned Antpitta (Grallaria ruficapilla), Amazonian Kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona), Ring Kingfisher, Fasciated Tiger Heron (Tigrisoma fasciatum), Little Woodstar (Chaetocercus bombus), Torrent Duck (Merganetta armata), Torrent Tyrannulet (Serpophaga cinerea), Blakc Chested Buzzard Eagle (Geranoaetus melanoleucus), Mitred Parakeet (Psittacara mitrata), Peruvian pigeon (Patagioenas oenops), Koepcke's Screeh Owl (Megascops koepckeae); once we reach Leimebamba we will visit some hummingbird feeders and and have the chance to see species like: Sword Billed Hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera), Rainbow Starfrontlet (Coeligena iris), Marvelous Spatuletail (Loddigesia mirabilis), White bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia chionogaster), Little Woodstar (Chaetocercus bombus), Rusty Flowerpiercer (Diglossa sittoides), Golden bellied Grosbeak (Pheucticus chrysogaster), Peruvian Meadowlark (Sturnella bellicosa). We will spend the night at Leimebamba.

Day12: Leimebamba all day

This day we will visit Canyon of the Condors which is found 45 minutes away from Leimebamba, there we can see birds like: Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus), White Capped Tanager (Sericossypha albocristata), Hooded Tanager Red (Piranga rubriceps), White Collared Jay (Cyanolyca viridicyanus), Gray Breasted Mountain Toucan (Andigena hypoglauca), Quetzal Golded Headed (Pharomachrus auriceps), Blackish Tapaculo (Scytalopus latrans), White Rumped Hawk (Parabuteo leucorrhous), Slaty Backed Chat Tyrant (Ochthoeca cinnamomeiventris), Northean Adean Cacique , Andean Guan (Penelope montagnii), Chesnut Crested Cotinga (Ampelion rufaxilla), Andean Strong Billed Woodcreeper, White Tailed Tyrannulet (Mecocerculus poecilocercus), Drab Hemispingus (Hemispingus xanthophthalmus), Highland Motmot (Momotus æquatorialis), among other bird species. At Leimebamba we can also see species like: Brown Viotear (Colibri delphinae), Little Woodstar (Chaetocercus bombus), Black Tailed Trainbearer (Lesbia victoriae), Purple Throated Sunangel (Heliangelus viola), Line Cheeked Spinetail (Cranioleuca antisiensis), and Yellow Breasted Brush Finch (Atlapetes latinuchus).

Day13: Leimebamba – Celendin

This day we will travel towards the Marañon Valley in our private bus, along the way we will make some stops in order to look for some endemic species like: ***Russet Mantled Softtail (Thripophaga berlepschi), Yellow Faced Parrotlet (Forpus xanthops), Buff Bridled Inca Finch (Incaspiza laeta), Gray Winged Inca Finch (Incaspiza ortizi), ***Chestnut Backed Thornbird (Phacellodomus dorsalis), Peruvian pigeon (Patagioenas oenops), and ***Black Necked Woodpecker (Colaptes atricollis); we can also observe species like: Striped Cuckoo (Tapera naevia), Purple Collared Woodstar (Myrtis fanny), Lesser Goldfinch (Spinus psaltria), Purple Throated Euphonia ( Euphonia chlorotica), Peruvian pygmy Owl (Glaucidium peruanum), Spot Throated Hummingbird (Leucippus taczanowskii), Marañon Gnagcatcher, Tawny Crowned Pygmy Tyrant (Euscarthmus meloryphus), and Hooded Siskin (Spinus magellanica).we will spend the night in a local hotel.

Day14: Celendin – Cajamarca

In Our way to Cajamarca we will stop at at Cruz Conga where we will look for: Rufous Antpitta (Grallaria rufula), ***Baron's Spinetail (Cranioleuca baroni), White Tailed Shrike Tyrant (Agriornis andicola), Brown-backed Chat Tyrant (Ochthoeca fumicolor), Rufous Webbed tyrant (Polioxolmis rufipennis), Black Crested Tit Tyrant (Anairetes nigrocristatus), and Plumbeous Rail (Pardirallus sanguinolentus). Later along the way we can also find bird species like: Rufous Eared Brush Finch (Atlapetes rufigenis), Black Metatail ( Metallura phoebe), Jelski's Chat Tyrant (Ochthoeca jelskii), Buff Bellied Tanager (Thlypopsis inornata), Shining Subeam (Aglaeactis cupripennis), Streak Throated Bush Tyrant (Myiotheretes striaticollis), White Browed Chat Tyrant (Ochthoeca leucophrys), Green Tailed Trainbearer (Lesbia nuna), Gray Bellied Comet (Taphrolesbia griseiventris), ***Rusty Crowned Tit Spinetail (Leptasthenura pileata), Black Metaltail (Metallura phoebe), Giant Hummingbird (Patagona gigas), White Winged Cinclodes (Cinclodes atacamensis), Mourning Sierra Finch (Phrygilus fruticeti), Yellow Billed Tit Tyrant (Anairetes flavirostris), Andea Swift, Green tailed Traibearer (Lesbia nuna), and Black Eagle Chested Buzzard (Geranoaetus melanoleucus).

Day15: Cajamarca – Lima

Today as part of our last activity we will visit San Marcos in order to find the following bird species: Great Spinetail (Synallaxis hypochondriaca), ***Black Necked Woodpecker (Colaptes atricollis), Buff Bridled Inca Finch (Incaspiza laeta), White winged Black Tyrant (Knipolegus aterrimus), Masked Yellow throat (Geothlypis aequinoctialis), Purple Collared Woodstar (Myrtis fanny), Lesser Goldfinch (Spinus psaltria), Spot Throated Hummingbird (Leucippus taczanowskii); later we will travel towards Cajamarca airport where our services will end.
